ear training

As I mentioned the other day, I’ll be doing a free Ear Training session live on YouTube.

Ear Training sounds really boring doesn’t it?

What really is Ear Training? And why should you do it?

Let me put it this way…

Ear Training are essentially exercises that help you internalize and absorb the nuances of a maqam in a natural and innate way.

It’s like Monkey see… Monkey do…

Or rather… Monkey hear, Monkey sing…

It’s just like learning how to speak a language.

Repeat after me…

Me: “hello”…

You: “hello”…

That’s all there is to it. Whatever, you hear, you echo my voice. That’s all there is to Ear Training. But instead of using words, we use short melodies.

Why should you do Ear Training?

Ultimately, learning to repeat what you hear is the foundation for learning music. But there’s more…

It’s also the foundation for the capacity to improvise in the framework of a maqam or mode.

You want to play a beautiful Oud taqsim? Then at some point you’ll be doing Ear Training.

Ear Training doesn’t have to be called that. How about we call it…

Learning a maqam…

Making music…

Ear Tuning

Brain-Voice Calibration

Whatever you want…

Regardless of what it’s called, it’s fun, anyone can do it, you can be an experienced musician or a complete beginner. If you can “Monkey see, Monkey do” even a little bit… then you can join this free Ear Training session on YouTube.

So how do you go about doing some Ear Training?

Good question…

Tomorrow I’ll share with you various ways you can learn the nuances of a maqam. You’ll learn several tactics you can use to learn maqams, train your ears, and become a better musician and Oud player. And one day, you’ll be playing taqasim.

So stay tuned because you’re going to learn a lot over the next few days.
